This mural was made in collaboration with Samuel Gratton, where we reflected on a common trope for cisgendered artists, which is to focus only on the physical characteristics of trans people. We were (and continue to be) tired of being told that cisgender artists are using their objectifying projects to "give transgender people a voice", when they are constantly being silenced. Instead, as transgender people, we created a mural where our aim was to subvert this narrative and create our own– making it very clear that work centred around this trope is perpetuating harmful stereotypes by encouraging unsafe ways of looking and interacting with trans people. Our canvas was the walls of an art institution: where the beginning of artists’ practices and art movements happen. While the walls will be painted over and their mural will be covered, these words are now embedded into this wall as an act of our resilience, activism, and our constant effort to speak up.
It was approximately 7ft by 20ft, handpainted at OCAD University in 2019.
